I.Lesser Prairie Chicken Decline Conservation Efforts
Lesser prairie-chicken populations face significant challenges. Declines across their historic range raise serious conservation concerns. These birds are a candidate for Threatened status under the Endangered Species Act. Understanding their population dynamics is vital for effective management and species recovery. This research provides critical data on breeding season demographics for the species. Protecting grassland ecosystems is a paramount conservation objective.
1.1. Species Status and Range Contraction
The Lesser Prairie-Chicken (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus) once occupied a vast range. Since 1900, its numbers have dropped dramatically. The historic range included all of the Texas Panhandle. Currently, only two distinct populations remain in this region: northeastern and southwestern areas. This decline highlights urgent needs for prairie chicken conservation. Habitat loss and fragmentation are major threats to grassland ecosystems supporting this species. Related species like the Greater Prairie Chicken (Tympanuchus cupido) also face conservation challenges.
1.2. Study Objectives and Research Area
A three-year study investigated Lesser Prairie-Chicken demographics. Research focused on private properties in Gray and Hemphill counties, Texas. The study period spanned March 1 to August 31, from 2008 to 2010. Primary objectives included estimating survival rates for breeding birds. Nest survival and chick survival were also key metrics. Data collected contributed to a population viability analysis. This analysis projected extinction risk for the northeastern Texas Panhandle population. Additionally, the efficacy of traditional road-based lek surveys was assessed. This research provides a foundation for improved habitat management strategies.
II.Breeding Season Survival of Prairie Chickens Studied
Breeding season survival rates are fundamental to population dynamics. This research meticulously tracked Lesser Prairie-Chickens. Data revealed distinct survival patterns based on sex, age, and season. Understanding these patterns is crucial for targeting conservation efforts. Low survival rates directly impact population growth. This information is vital for effective prairie chicken conservation.
2.1. Male Survival Rates by Season and Age
Male survival varied significantly by season and age-class. Juvenile male survival during the lekking season was high (1.00). This dropped considerably during the nesting season (0.62). Adult male survival showed different trends. During the lekking season, adult male survival was 0.10. It further decreased to 0.08 during the nesting season. These figures indicate heightened vulnerability during breeding activities. Such data informs habitat management priorities for Lesser Prairie-Chickens.
2.2. Female Survival Across Breeding Season
Female survival exhibited less variation. It did not differ significantly with respect to season or age. The overall breeding season survival for females was 0.13. This consistent low survival rate is a critical finding. It suggests females face constant risks throughout the reproductive period. Factors influencing female survival are key to overall breeding success. Improved female survival directly impacts population dynamics.
2.3. Causes of Mortality Investigated

III.Nesting Ecology Chick Survival in Grassland Habitat

This study provided stark figures on these critical demographic parameters. The findings underscore significant challenges for Lesser Prairie-Chickens in grassland ecosystems. Enhancing breeding success is a core component of prairie chicken conservation efforts.
3.1. Nest Survival Challenges Identified
Nest survival rates were alarmingly low. The study reported a nest survival rate of only 0.05. This means very few nests successfully hatched. Factors influencing nest success are complex. Nest location and vegetation characteristics play a role. Predation is a primary driver of nest failure. Improving nesting cover is essential for habitat management. Better nesting ecology supports species recovery.
3.2. Early Chick Survival Critical Factors
Chick survival also presented a concerning picture. Survival rates were notably lower during the initial phase. Between hatch and 14 days post-hatch, survival was 0.01. This rate improved slightly from 15-63 days post-hatch (0.32). The first two weeks are a highly vulnerable period for chicks. Adequate cover and insect availability are crucial for chick survival. Conservation efforts must focus on improving conditions for both nests and young chicks. This boosts overall breeding success for Lesser Prairie-Chickens.
IV.Prairie Chicken Population Dynamics Viability Analyzed
Population viability analysis provides a powerful tool. It estimates future population trends and extinction risk. This study leveraged collected demographic data. The analysis highlighted the severe precariousness of the Lesser Prairie-Chicken population. Urgent conservation actions are clearly indicated. 4.1. Population Growth Rate Assessment
The population viability analysis revealed a critical finding. The estimated population growth rate (λ) was 0.44. A growth rate below 1.0 indicates a declining population. This figure points to an unsustainable trajectory. The population is shrinking rapidly under current conditions. This emphasizes the dire need for intervention in grassland ecosystems. Management strategies must aim to increase this rate.
4.2. Time to Extinction Projections
Based on field data, the analysis projected a short time to extinction. Under baseline conditions, extinction was estimated within 3.5 years. Douglas Holt, December 2012 ABSTRACT Lesser prairie-chicken (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus) populations have declined across their range since 1900 and are a candidate for listing as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
The historic lesser prairie-chicken range included all of the Texas panhandle. Currently, lesser prairie-chickens are found in 2 distinct populations in the northeastern and southwestern Texas panhandle. I conducted a 3-year study of breeding season demographics of lesser prairie-chickens on private properties in Gray and Hemphill counties (1 March-31 August, 2008-2010). I estimated male and female breeding bird survival, nest survival, and chick survival.
I used demographic data collected during this study to conduct a population viability analysis and estimate time until extinction in the northeastern Texas panhandle. I assessed the efficacy of traditional road-based lek surveys to monitor lesser prairie- chicken populations in the Rolling Plains and High Plains ecoregions of Texas. Male survival differed between seasons and age-classes. Juvenile male survival was 1.00) during the lekking season and 0.62) during the nesting season.
Adult male survival was 0.10) during the lekking season and 0.08) during the nesting season. Female survival did not differ with respect to season or age and was 0.13) for the entire breeding season. Nest survival was 0.05) during my study. Chick survival was lower between hatch and 14 days post hatch (0.01) than 15-63 days post-hatch (0.
Results of a population viability analysis indicated low population growth rate (=0.44) and time to extinction was 3.5 years under baseline conditions based on field data. The probability of detecting an active lek during road-based lek surveys was affected by wind speed, wind direction, and ecoregion.
Current assumptions of detectability of active leks are likely too great and should be adjusted based on environmental conditions. Due to the drastic reduction in lesser prairie-chicken population across their range, listing as threatened is likely. As such, it is important to collect demographic data and establish management plans for species recovery. The results of analyses based on the data collected during my study suggest that the lesser prairie-chicken population in the northeastern Texas panhandle are on the brink of extripation.
